Helping Kids Thrive This Summer: Parenting Tips from Lumitot’s Dr. Karen Molano

Summer brings longer days, family adventures, and a break from the normal school routine. It can also present new challenges for parents trying to balance schedules, healthy habits, and screen time. Dr. Karen Molano, a child development expert, offers practical advice for helping kids thrive during these months without turning the home into a battleground.

First, structure matters even when school is out. Kids feel safer when they know what to expect. A loose daily rhythm, not a rigid timetable, works best. For example, mornings can be for outdoor play or creative projects, afternoons for quiet reading or naps, and evenings for family time. This prevents the chaos of endless free time while still allowing flexibility.

Screen time is a common struggle. Instead of banning devices outright, Dr. Molano suggests setting clear boundaries early. Let kids earn screen time through chores or physical activity. Better yet, model the behavior yourself. If you put your phone away during meals or outdoor time, they are more likely to follow.

Summer is also prime time for emotional growth. Boredom is not a crisis. When a child says "I'm bored," resist the urge to fix it instantly. Boredom sparks creativity and problem-solving. Keep basic supplies like art materials, building blocks, and board games accessible. Let them figure out how to entertain themselves.

Finally, prioritize connection over perfection. You do not need elaborate vacations or Pinterest-worthy activities. Simple moments, like a picnic in the backyard or a bike ride together, build lasting memories. The goal is not to keep kids busy every second but to help them feel safe, loved, and capable of handling downtime. Summer is a chance to slow down and enjoy each other.
