My mother had a rule that felt absolute when I was growing up. Anything less than an A was unacceptable. A B meant I had not tried hard enough. A C meant something was wrong with me. She believed she was building character, preparing me for a competitive world. What she actually built was a deep fear of making mistakes.
That fear followed me into adulthood. I avoided challenges where I might not excel. I stayed quiet in meetings rather than risk saying something wrong. I measured my worth in achievements and crumbled quietly whenever I fell short. Perfectionism looked like discipline from the outside. Inside, it felt like constant anxiety.
Now I have a son. He is six years old and brings home drawings that look like scribbles and math worksheets with wrong answers circled in crayon. My first instinct, trained over decades, is to correct him. I catch myself before the words leave my mouth.
I am trying something different. When he shows me a mistake, I ask him what he learned. When he fails at something, I tell him that trying matters more than getting it right. I do not want him to spend thirty years afraid of being imperfect. I want him to know that failure is information, not judgment.
This is not about lowering standards. It is about removing shame from the process. My son deserves to grow up curious and brave, not careful and afraid. Breaking this cycle is the hardest and most important thing I have ever done.
