The Guilt of Balancing Work and a Sick Child

The Guilt of Balancing Work and a Sick Child

It's a dilemma all parents face at one time or another: what to do when your child is ill on a work day. For families in Sussex, the pressure can feel especially sharp, with rising living costs, limited childcare options, and workplaces that often expect staff to be present no matter what.

The guilt cuts both ways. Stay home, and you worry about missed meetings, unfinished projects, and colleagues picking up the slack. Go to work, and you spend the day distracted, checking your phone for updates and wondering whether you made the right call. Either way, someone ends up disappointed.

Many parents describe a quiet sense of failure that comes with this choice. They feel they are letting down their employer or their child, sometimes both at once. The mental load does not switch off when the laptop closes or the office door shuts.

What helps, parents say, is honesty and flexibility. Managers who understand that children get sick, and who allow remote work or last minute leave, make a real difference. So does having a backup plan, whether that is a partner, a grandparent, or a trusted friend.

No policy can remove the guilt entirely. But recognising that it is a shared experience, rather than a personal failing, can make the hardest days a little easier to carry.
