We're paying rent for our adult children while they get their footing

We're paying rent for our adult children while they get their footing

My husband and I have a standing arrangement with our two adult children, both in their twenties. We cover their rent. Not because they cannot work, not because they blew through their savings, and not because we are trying to buy their love. We do it because the math of starting out today does not add up, and we happen to be in a position to help.

People hear this and assume we are enabling laziness. The opposite is true. Both of them hold full-time jobs, cook their own meals, and pay for their own groceries, phone bills, and car insurance. They just cannot stretch a first-year salary far enough to cover a one-bedroom apartment in a safe neighborhood, let alone save for a security deposit or an emergency fund. So we step in for a set period, usually twelve to eighteen months, and cover the housing line item.

The point is not to keep them comfortable forever. It is to let them build traction. Without rent weighing them down, they can pay off student loans faster, contribute to a retirement account, or simply breathe. That breathing room changes how they approach job hunting. They can hold out for a role that fits their skills instead of grabbing the first gig that pays the bills. They can take a slightly lower offer if it comes with better mentorship.

We treat this like a bridge, not a hammock. We sit down with them every few months and look at their budget. We ask to see their savings balance. We talk about what the exit ramp looks like. One of them is already close to taking over the full payment. The other is about six months away.

Some friends tell us we are spoiling them. I tell them we are front-loading the support that used to come from a different economy. When we were their age, a studio apartment cost about a third of a starting salary. Now it is more than half in most cities. That is not a character flaw in our kids. That is a market shift.

So yes, we write the check every month. And we will keep doing it for a little while longer. Not because they need a handout, but because a hand up at the right moment can change the whole trajectory. When they finally take over the rent, they will do it with savings, confidence, and a clear plan. That is not a failure. That is a good investment.
