Child development experts are raising concerns about everyday parenting behaviors that, while often unintentional, could increase the likelihood of a child becoming a bully. The warning comes as researchers highlight how exhaustion and stress can lead parents into patterns that model aggressive or dismissive behavior.
"This is hard because sometimes parents do these things accidentally because they're tired or they're exhausted," said one specialist. The key issue, experts explain, is that children learn social cues primarily from their parents. When a parent frequently uses sarcasm, dismisses a child's feelings, or responds to frustration with yelling, the child may adopt those same tactics with peers.
Another common pitfall is overprotection. Shielding a child from all consequences or never allowing them to experience disappointment can foster a sense of entitlement. That child might then struggle to handle conflict or rejection, lashing out instead of negotiating.
Experts also point to inconsistent discipline. When rules change based on a parent's mood, children learn that power and unpredictability are normal. They may then try to exert that same unpredictable control over others.
The goal is not to shame parents, but to raise awareness. Small shifts, like pausing before reacting or validating a child's emotions without giving in to demands, can make a significant difference. Recognizing these patterns early offers a chance to correct course before bullying becomes a habit.
