Dr. Randy Cale’s Terrific Parenting: Pulling back the reins on a racing mind

Many parents describe their child as a whirlwind, a constant blur of motion and chatter. But for some kids, the real storm is happening inside. Their minds race from one thought to the next, making it nearly impossible to settle down, focus on homework, or fall asleep at night. Dr. Randy Cale's latest guidance focuses on this exact struggle: how to help a child who simply cannot seem to slow their mental engine.

The problem is not always about discipline or defiance. Often, it is a neurological habit. The child's brain has learned to operate at high speed, jumping between ideas, worries, and plans without a pause button. When we tell these kids to "calm down" or "focus," we are asking them to do something they do not know how to do. They need concrete tools, not just commands.

Dr. Cale suggests that parents first stop trying to argue with the racing thoughts. Instead, the goal is to teach the brain a new rhythm. One effective method is to introduce a simple, repetitive physical action that forces the mind to follow. For example, having the child take ten slow, deep breaths while counting each one. This is not a punishment; it is a reset. Another approach is to create a predictable "wind-down" routine that starts at the same time every evening. This routine should be quiet, screen-free, and involve a physical task like organizing a desk or folding laundry. The repetitive motion helps the brain shift gears.

The key is consistency. A racing mind will not slow down after one attempt. Parents need to practice these calming exercises with their child during calm moments, not just during a meltdown. Over time, the brain begins to associate these actions with safety and stillness. The goal is not to eliminate all energy, but to give the child the power to choose when to speed up and when to ease off the gas pedal.
