As founder of The Tenth Wellness, a retreat built around postpartum recovery and maternal wellbeing, Hiba Siddiqui has spent years studying what mothers truly need. But raising her six-year-old son has taught her more than any research ever could. Here are the parenting lessons that shape her daily family life, from building a child's confidence to letting go of the myth of perfection.
First, children do not need a perfect parent. They need a present one. Showing up tired, messy, and honest is far more valuable than pretending to have it all together. Second, confidence grows from small, real choices. Let your child pick their own socks, even if they clash. Let them pour their own milk, even if it spills. These tiny moments build a sense of capability that no compliment can replace.
Third, boredom is not an emergency. It is the space where creativity and self-reliance are born. Fourth, apologize when you are wrong. A simple, sincere sorry teaches more about accountability than any lecture. Fifth, do not rush to fix every problem. Sometimes a child just needs to be heard, not rescued.
Sixth, routines matter, but flexibility matters more. A missed nap or a late bedtime will not undo your parenting. Seventh, comparison is the thief of joy, and that applies to parenting too. Your child's timeline is their own. Eighth, say yes more often than you say no, but mean it when you say no. Ninth, your own wellbeing is part of the equation. A depleted parent cannot pour into anyone else. Tenth, let them get bored, let them get messy, let them get it wrong. That is how they learn.
Eleventh, listen more than you instruct. Twelfth, celebrate effort, not just results. Thirteenth, do not take their tantrums personally. Fourteenth, read together every day, even if it is just one page. Fifteenth, and most importantly, perfection does not exist. What exists is love, patience, and the willingness to try again tomorrow. That is enough. That is more than enough.
