For years, family holidays meant packing snacks, wrangling tantrums, and scheduling every activity around nap times. But after finally booking a week in Crete without the kids, one parent realized she had been missing out on a crucial reset. The Greek island offered the tranquility needed to ease back into the magical, insular world of the couples' getaway.
The trip was not about escaping responsibility, but about rediscovering a version of herself that had been buried under school runs and bedtime stories. Mornings started with slow coffee on a sun-warmed terrace, not a frantic search for missing shoes. Evenings meant lingering over a bottle of local wine while watching the sunset, with no one asking for dessert before dinner.
The author admits she once felt guilty for even considering a holiday without her children. But the silence on the Cretan coast was not lonely. It was restorative. She and her partner talked about things other than the kids' schedules, remembered inside jokes, and held hands without having to break apart to chase a toddler.
Looking back, she regrets not doing it sooner. The break did not make her love her family less. It made her a more patient, present parent. For anyone on the fence, she says, book the flight. The kids will survive. And you might just remember who you are.
