The pressure to be the perfect parent can be overwhelming, but social media and perceived world threats are causing some to become overprotective parents, negatively affecting young people.
Many parents today feel they must get every decision right. They compare themselves to curated images of family life online, where every meal looks healthy and every child seems to excel. That constant comparison fuels anxiety. In response, some parents tighten control. They limit where children go, who they see, and what they try on their own.
Experts say this overprotection can backfire. Children need room to make mistakes, solve problems, and face small risks. When parents remove every obstacle, kids may struggle with confidence and decision making later in life. Anxiety and dependence can grow instead of independence.
The fear is understandable. News cycles highlight danger, and social platforms reward dramatic stories. But shielding children from all discomfort does not prepare them for the real world. It often leaves them less equipped to handle setbacks.
A healthier approach involves balance. Parents can set clear boundaries while still allowing freedom to explore. Talking through fears, rather than acting on every one, helps both parents and children. Support networks and honest conversations with other families can also ease the pressure.
Being a good parent does not mean being flawless. It means being present, consistent, and willing to let children grow.
