Raising Independent Kids: Five Things They Handle Themselves

Jodie Lopez is raising her two sons to be independent. She expects them to manage their belongings, complete chores, and solve problems. That approach shapes the way her household runs day to day.

The first thing her kids handle is their own stuff. Backpacks, shoes, and school papers belong to the boys, not to her. If a permission slip goes missing, they learn to track it down. The second is chores. Both sons have regular jobs around the house, from clearing the table to sorting laundry. Nobody gets paid for basic contributions to the family.

The third is getting ready in the morning. Lopez does not chase anyone out the door. Her sons set alarms, pack lunches, and keep track of time. The fourth is handling disagreements with friends and siblings. She listens when they want to talk, but she does not rush in to fix every conflict. The fifth is managing small problems on their own, like a forgotten homework sheet or a broken toy, before asking for help.

Lopez says the early years took patience. Letting a child struggle with a zipper or a lost library book is slower than doing it yourself. Over time, though, the payoff shows up in small moments. Her sons speak up for themselves, take responsibility when something goes wrong, and need fewer reminders.

She is quick to add that independence is not the same as being left alone. Her kids know she is nearby if something truly goes wrong. The goal, she says, is to raise people who can look after themselves and others.
