BOSTON - A new study suggests that negative parenting styles may raise the risk of internet gaming disorder in children who already have ADHD. The findings were presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting.
Researchers found that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are more vulnerable to developing problematic gaming habits when exposed to harsh or inconsistent parenting behaviors. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that family dynamics play a significant role in how children with ADHD interact with digital media.
Dr. Emily Wassmer, a developmental and behavioral pediatrics specialist, noted that an estimated 80% to 90% of children in the United States play video games, with many starting as early as toddlerhood. For children with ADHD, the appeal of fast-paced, reward-driven games can be especially strong. But when parents respond with criticism, punishment, or emotional distance, the risk of compulsive gaming appears to increase.
The study did not specify which parenting behaviors were most harmful, but experts suggest that warm, structured, and consistent parenting may help protect against gaming disorder. The findings highlight the importance of addressing family interactions as part of treatment for children with ADHD, rather than focusing only on the child's symptoms or screen time limits.
Gaming disorder is characterized by loss of control over gaming, prioritizing it over other activities, and continued use despite negative consequences. For children with ADHD, these patterns can develop more quickly and become harder to break without supportive parenting.
