From the shared family television to the private smartphone, the screens we grew up with may help explain some workplace friction.
People who came of age during the era of broadcast television often learned to consume information on a fixed schedule. Programs aired at set times, commercials interrupted the flow, and everyone in the room watched the same thing. That experience trained a kind of patience and a tolerance for linear structure that shows up in how these workers approach meetings, deadlines, and group projects.
Those who grew up with personal devices had a different training. Streaming, skipping, pausing, and switching between apps became second nature. Attention learned to move quickly between inputs, and control over what to watch and when became the default expectation. In a workplace, that can translate into impatience with long presentations, a preference for asynchronous communication, and frustration when technology or process feels unnecessarily slow.
The friction appears when these habits collide. Older employees may see constant phone checking as disengagement, while younger ones may see scheduled meetings as inefficient. Neither side is simply wrong. Each is carrying a set of assumptions about attention and control that formed long before they ever held a job.
Understanding this gap matters for managers trying to build teams that span generations. Rather than treating the differences as character flaws, it helps to see them as learned patterns. Small adjustments, such as offering recordings of meetings or setting clear expectations around response times, can reduce tension. The screens changed how people pay attention. Workplaces can adapt without asking anyone to pretend otherwise.
