Adolescent girls in Nairobi's informal settlements face a harsh double burden: the physical challenges of early pregnancy and a hidden mental health crisis fueled by relentless stigma. While these young mothers navigate poverty and limited healthcare, the social blame falls almost entirely on them. Boys and men who are equally responsible for the pregnancies often remain invisible, escaping the shame and judgment that the girls endure daily.
This imbalance creates a toxic environment. Pregnant and parenting teens report feeling isolated, humiliated, and abandoned by their families and communities. Many are forced to drop out of school, not just because of the pregnancy, but because of the gossip and exclusion from peers and teachers. The resulting loss of education and social standing leads to deep anxiety, depression, and in some cases, suicidal thoughts.
Experts note that the silence around male responsibility worsens the problem. Without accountability for the fathers, the cycle repeats. Girls are left to raise children alone, often in extreme poverty, while their own mental health deteriorates. Community programs that offer counseling and school re-entry support exist, but they are scarce. The real need, advocates say, is for a cultural shift that stops blaming the girl and starts addressing the root causes of teenage pregnancy, including poverty, lack of sex education, and the normalization of male irresponsibility. Until then, the hidden mental toll on these young mothers will continue to grow, unseen and unaddressed.
