Navigating Screen Time: A Parent Educator’s Guide for Modern Families

Parent educator Katie Dilzell recently offered practical strategies for families struggling to manage screen time in an increasingly digital world. Rather than advocating for outright bans, Dilzell emphasizes a balanced approach that prioritizes connection over restriction.

According to Dilzell, the key is not to eliminate screens entirely but to establish clear boundaries that align with family values. She suggests that parents first examine their own screen habits, as children often mimic adult behavior. “If we are constantly on our phones during dinner or while driving, our kids will see that as normal,” Dilzell notes. She recommends creating tech-free zones, such as the dining table and bedrooms, to foster meaningful face-to-face interaction.

Dilzell also advises families to co-create a media plan that includes designated times for educational content, creative apps, and physical activity. She warns against using screens as a default babysitter, urging parents to engage with their children about what they are watching or playing. “Ask questions like, ‘What did you learn from that game?’ or ‘How did that video make you feel?’” she suggests, turning passive consumption into an active learning opportunity.

For younger children, Dilzell stresses the importance of unstructured playtime without digital distractions. For teens, she recommends negotiating screen limits together rather than imposing strict rules, which can lead to rebellion. Ultimately, Dilzell’s message is one of intentionality: screens are tools, not replacements for real-world experiences. By modeling mindful usage and maintaining open communication, families can transform screen time from a source of conflict into a shared, positive part of daily life.
