A clinical psychologist recently told Newsweek that children in middle childhood, roughly ages six to twelve, often get overlooked by parents who assume they need less hands-on care. But the reality is quite different. These so-called "forgotten years" are a critical period when kids require a different kind of support, not less of it.
During this stage, children are developing their sense of identity, navigating complex social dynamics at school, and facing academic pressure for the first time. Parents may mistakenly pull back, thinking their child is becoming more independent. However, the psychologist emphasized that this is exactly when kids need consistent emotional availability and guidance. They are learning how to handle disappointment, manage friendships, and cope with failure. Without a parent's active presence, these lessons can feel isolating.
The expert advised that instead of stepping away, parents should shift their role from manager to consultant. Listen more than you lecture. Ask open-ended questions about their day. Validate their frustrations instead of immediately offering solutions. The goal is to build a secure foundation that allows the child to explore their independence while knowing they have a safe place to return to. Ignoring this phase can lead to missed opportunities for connection that are harder to rebuild in the teenage years.
