Why Some Parents Think American Parenting Is "Over-the-Top and Ridiculous"

Why Some Parents Think American Parenting Is

A growing number of people are calling out American parenting habits as strange and excessive. Comments like "It's very, very weird" and "Parenting here is over-the-top, and I find it ridiculous" are popping up in online discussions, as more families from other countries share their shock at how Americans raise their children.

One major difference is the constant supervision. In many parts of the world, kids walk to school alone, play outside without an adult watching, and entertain themselves for hours. In the United States, parents often feel pressure to schedule every minute of a child's day with activities, classes, and playdates. Strangers may even call the police if they see a child alone in a park.

Another habit that baffles outsiders is the obsession with safety. American parents buy special baby food makers, outlet covers for every socket, and knee pads for toddlers learning to walk. Many foreign parents say this level of caution feels unnecessary and even harmful. They argue that kids need scrapes and boredom to learn resilience.

The focus on constant praise also stands out. American parents often tell children they are "special" and "amazing" for small tasks. In other cultures, parents are more direct and expect kids to follow rules without a reward. Critics say this creates children who cannot handle criticism.

Finally, the cost of American parenting surprises many. From $1,000 strollers to expensive birthday parties, the pressure to keep up is real. Visitors from Europe, Asia, and South America often say they feel sorry for American parents who seem exhausted by their own standards. As one commenter put it, "It looks like a job, not a family."
