Why My 8-Year-Old Uses CDs Instead of Streaming Apps

Why My 8-Year-Old Uses CDs Instead of Streaming Apps

My daughter is eight years old, and she listens to music on compact discs. This was not part of some carefully planned parenting philosophy. It happened after I opened a streaming app on her tablet and saw what popped up in the search results. Playlist covers with images I would not want a child to see, let alone click on. That was enough for me.

So I dug out an old portable CD player and a stack of discs I had kept in a box for years. She figured out the buttons in about five minutes. Now she has her own small collection, and she picks what she wants to hear by flipping through plastic cases instead of scrolling through an endless feed.

There is a real difference between the two experiences. A streaming service decides what to suggest next. It tracks what she plays and builds a profile. It pushes songs based on what keeps her listening longest, not what is good for her. A CD just plays. When the album ends, it stops. If she wants something else, she has to get up and find it.

She listens to the same albums over and over, which experts say helps kids build memory and attention. She studies the liner notes. She asks me questions about the bands. We talk about the songs instead of letting an algorithm queue up the next thing.

I am not against technology. I use streaming myself. But there is no rush to hand a child a system designed to hold her attention for as long as possible. For now, the CD player works fine. She is learning to choose her own music, one disc at a time.
