When One Child Needs More: Recognising the Overlooked Sibling

Families often develop routines around the child who needs the most attention. A sibling with a disability, an illness, or ongoing behavioural challenges can absorb a great deal of a parent's time and energy. The other child, meanwhile, may quietly adapt, asking for little and causing few problems. This pattern is sometimes described as glass child syndrome, a term that captures how siblings of children with high needs can become invisible within their own family.

The label "easy child" can feel like a compliment, but it often carries a hidden cost. Children who are praised for being low maintenance may learn to suppress their own worries, needs, and frustrations. They might avoid asking for help because they do not want to add to the family's burden. Over time, this can lead to anxiety, resentment, or a sense of not mattering as much as their sibling.

Parents can miss these signals without meaning to. Daily life is demanding, and the squeaky wheel usually gets the attention. But small moments of recognition can make a real difference. Checking in privately, listening without rushing to solve, and acknowledging that a child's feelings are valid even when their problems seem smaller all help. It also matters to set aside one to one time that is not tied to a crisis or a schedule.

Being the sibling of someone with significant needs can build empathy and resilience, but it should not come at the expense of a child's sense of being seen. Parents do not need to get everything right. They need to notice when one child has gone quiet, and to make space for that child to be heard.
