A new national survey of thousands of parents has pulled back the curtain on a stubborn reality: the experience of raising a child remains vastly different for mothers and fathers. The National Parent Survey, which asked parents about their work schedules, the daily struggle of balancing a job with child care, and their hopes for the future, found one number that sums up the entire divide.
When asked about the division of labor at home, 72% of mothers said they were the primary parent responsible for managing the household and children. Only 28% of fathers said the same. That gap is not just about chores. It shapes careers, sleep schedules, and mental health. Mothers were far more likely to report cutting back on work hours or turning down a promotion to handle child care. Fathers, meanwhile, were much more likely to say their work schedule had not changed at all after having a child.
The survey also dug into the emotional side of parenting. While both moms and dads reported high levels of joy, mothers were significantly more likely to say they felt overwhelmed and exhausted on a daily basis. The data suggests that while society has made progress in talking about shared parenting, the actual day-to-day reality still puts the bulk of the mental and physical load on women.
Researchers say the findings highlight a need for better workplace policies, such as paid family leave for both parents and more flexible scheduling. Without those changes, the divide between new moms and new dads is likely to persist for the next generation.
