I tried Dish by Blue Apron to see how easy it really is, what the meals are like, and whether it could earn a spot in my weeknight dinner rotation. The timing was not ideal. My partner was away for work, leaving me alone with two kids, a full time job, and the usual evening chaos that comes with homework, bath time, and the endless question of what to eat.
The premise of Dish is simple. It is a meal kit service built around single serving, microwave ready meals rather than the traditional box of raw ingredients and a recipe card. You pick from a rotating menu, the food arrives chilled, and each tray goes from fridge to table in a few minutes. No chopping, no pans, no cleanup beyond tossing the container.
That last part mattered more than I expected. On a normal week I can handle a recipe with twelve steps. On a solo parenting week I cannot. The first meal I tried was a chicken and rice bowl with a mild sauce. It came out of the microwave hot and evenly cooked, which is not always a given with this kind of product. The portion was reasonable for one adult, though I would not call it generous. The second meal, a pasta dish with vegetables, held up better than I thought it would. The pasta was not mushy, and the sauce had actual flavor rather than the flat, salty taste that often shows up in prepared meals.
Not everything worked. One shrimp option had a texture that felt a little rubbery after reheating, and the seasoning was on the bland side. The packaging is also a lot of plastic, which is worth knowing if that is a concern for you.
What I kept coming back to was the time saved. Dinner went from a thirty minute production to a five minute task. That meant I could sit down with my kids instead of standing at the stove. For a week when I was stretched thin, that was the real value. It is not restaurant quality, and it is not meant to be. It is a practical answer to a busy night, and for that, it earned a spot in my rotation.
