Parents of kids with disability more likely to be burnt out, study finds

Parents of kids with disability more likely to be burnt out, study finds

A large-scale Australian study has revealed that parents who care for young children with a disability are twice as likely to report poor health, constant exhaustion, and deep loneliness compared to other parents. The research, which tracked thousands of families, highlights the intense and often invisible strain placed on primary caregivers.

The findings show that these parents are not just tired; they describe a state of being perpetually "on call." Many reported feeling that their emotional and physical resources are completely drained, with little time for their own needs or social connections. The study points to a combination of factors, including navigating complex healthcare systems, managing therapy schedules, and dealing with financial pressure, all of which compound over time.

What is particularly striking is that the burnout is not linked to the severity of the child's disability alone. Instead, the lack of practical support and respite care appears to be the strongest predictor of parental distress. Parents who had access to regular, reliable help, whether from family or professional services, showed significantly lower rates of burnout.

The researchers argue that this is a public health issue, not just a personal one. When parents are burnt out, their own health suffers, which can in turn affect their ability to provide consistent care. The study calls for more targeted support, such as subsidized childcare, mental health services for caregivers, and more flexible work arrangements. Without these changes, the cycle of exhaustion and isolation is likely to continue for many families.
