Parents Need to Talk to Their Kids About AI Companions

Social psychologist and New York University Stern School of Business professor Jonathan Haidt wants parents to ask a new question at the dinner table. Have you talked to your kids about AI companions? His answer is simple. You should, and soon.

Haidt has spent years studying how smartphones and social media reshape childhood. Now he sees artificial intelligence chatbots as the next wave of that shift, and he argues the stakes are higher. These systems do not just distract. They talk back. They remember. They offer comfort, validation, and a sense of connection that can feel real to a developing mind.

For teenagers, that pull can be powerful. An AI companion never judges, never gets tired, and never asks for anything in return. That is exactly what makes it appealing, and exactly what makes it risky. Kids may start preferring the easy version of a relationship to the messy, difficult work of friendship.

Haidt's advice is not to ban the technology outright. It is to be present. Ask what apps your kids use. Ask what they talk about with them. Set limits the way you would for any other screen. Most of all, keep the conversation open so your child does not have to figure this out alone.

The tools are already here. The talk should start now.
