My kids are teens and my role changed; stepping back isn't always easy

My kids are teens and my role changed; stepping back isn't always easy

For years, my job as a mom was hands-on. I packed lunches, checked homework, tied shoes, and scheduled playdates. Now that my two boys are teenagers, that version of me has retired. My role has shifted from manager to consultant, and honestly, it is a harder transition than I expected.

I catch myself hovering. When my oldest forgets his permission slip, my first instinct is to call the school and fix it. But I stop. If he faces the consequence, he will remember next time. The same goes for my younger son, who recently bombed a math quiz because he stayed up late on his phone. I wanted to lecture him, but instead I just said, "That stinks. What will you do differently?" He shrugged, but I saw him set an alarm that night.

Stepping back does not mean I care less. It means I trust them more. They need space to make small mistakes now, so they can handle bigger ones later. Some days I still want to step in, especially when I see them stressed about friendships or grades. But I remind myself that my job is not to remove every obstacle. It is to let them climb over a few on their own.

It is lonely sometimes, this new distance. I miss the days when they needed me for everything. But I am proud of the young men they are becoming. So I stay close enough to catch them, but far enough to let them fall. And I keep learning that letting go is its own kind of love.
