A routine glance at a baby monitor turned into a life saving discovery for one family after a mother noticed something unusual about her two year old's eye.
While checking the video feed one evening, she saw that one of the child's eyes appeared completely black, while the other looked normal. The difference was striking enough that she decided to seek medical advice rather than dismiss it as a trick of the camera or poor lighting.
Doctors eventually diagnosed the toddler with a rare form of eye cancer. The condition, known as retinoblastoma, typically develops in young children and can be difficult to detect in its early stages. In many cases, the first sign is an unusual white glow or a dark appearance in the pupil, often visible only in certain lighting or through photographs.
Medical experts say early detection makes a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Because the mother acted quickly, the child was able to begin care before the cancer had a chance to spread further.
The family now encourages other parents to pay close attention to how their children's eyes look in photos and on video, especially when one eye behaves differently from the other. What seemed like a small detail on a screen became the clue that changed everything.
