I thought I was raising a confident girl. I filled her room with books about astronauts and inventors. I told her she could be anything she wanted. Then, last week, she said something that stopped me cold.
We were drawing at the kitchen table. She was coloring a picture of a person in a white coat. I asked if that was a doctor. She nodded. I said maybe she would be a doctor someday. She looked up at me, very serious, and said, "I can't. I'm a girl."
I did not know where to put that. We have never said anything like that in our house. Her school is full of girls who are loud and smart and take up space. I have never told her that some jobs are for boys and some are for girls. But somehow, she learned it anyway.
I asked her why she thought that. She shrugged and said, "Just because." That was it. No specific person told her. No show or book we watched together planted that idea. It came from somewhere in the air, from the world outside our front door.
I sat there for a second, trying to figure out how to answer. I did not want to make a big speech. I just said, "That is not true. Girls are doctors all the time. You can be one if you want." She looked at me for a long moment, then went back to coloring. I do not know if she believed me.
It is strange to realize that no matter how carefully you build a world for your child, the outside world still seeps in. I thought I was raising a girl who would never doubt her own abilities. But she already does. And I am not sure how to fix it, except to keep telling her the truth, over and over, until she hears it.
