Hurricane Season Emergency Planning Beyond the Parenting Plan

Hurricane Season Emergency Planning Beyond the Parenting Plan

For divorced and separated parents, the start of hurricane season brings a layer of complexity that standard emergency checklists often miss. While most households stock up on water, batteries, and plywood, co-parents face a unique challenge: how to keep a parenting plan running when the power grid fails and the roads flood.

When a storm approaches, the usual custody schedule can become impossible. Schools close days in advance, making drop-offs and pickups chaotic. Evacuation orders may force one parent to leave the designated zone while the other stays behind. Communication systems often fail, leaving parents unable to confirm if a child has arrived safely or if a change in plans is needed. Without a prearranged strategy, these moments can turn into panic and conflict.

The key is to build a storm-specific addendum to the existing parenting plan before the first cone appears on the weather map. This should include a clear trigger for when the emergency schedule kicks in, such as a mandatory evacuation or a school closure. Parents should agree on a primary decision-maker for evacuation, since split-second calls do not allow for back-and-forth negotiation. They also need a backup communication method, like a shared text message group with a relative or a prearranged check-in time on a satellite phone.

Another critical piece is the "what if" scenario. What if one parent evacuates to a different state and the storm passes quickly? What if the child is with a parent who cannot return home for weeks? The plan should outline a temporary custody arrangement that prioritizes safety over the usual 50-50 split. Finally, both parents should keep a physical copy of the emergency plan in their go-bags, along with copies of the child's birth certificate and medical records.

Storm season does not have to derail a co-parenting relationship. With a little foresight, parents can replace uncertainty with a clear, shared playbook that keeps their children safe and their cooperation intact.
